Abstract:

The experience of being deaf is unique for each individual. Some people are born with a hearing impairment or are completely deaf from birth. It is usual practice to use the term "deafened" to refer to those who have developed a hearing impairment in later years. However, "deaf" cannot be applied to each and every individual who struggles with hearing loss.
